Famine isn’t fun, but death by science fiction is. Can we create artificial intelligence without losing control of it? In this fifteen minute TED talk, American author, neuroscientist and philosopher, Sam Harris, brings up some important points in relation to this question.

Harris says we are going to build superhuman machines, but we haven’t yet grappled with the many problems associated with something that could just end up treating us in the same way that we treat ants.

Co-founder and chief executive of Project Reason, a non-profit organization that promotes science and secularism, Harris is also host of the podcast Waking Up with Sam Harris. The idea — for me — of creating software / AI is exciting. I once specialised in programming, learning around five languages, so can very much understanding how it all works. Can empathy be programmed and learnt? Hmmm...
