Some of us in Texas are getting these calls. Either a live caller or a robo call says "Can you hear me?" If you say "Yes", your answer may be recorded as proof that you agreed to some service and charges. The scammers may have other personal information since they have your phone call. Often the calling number has the same area code as yours, so you think it is someone you know.

If you refuse to pay, the scammers threaten legal action. Also, some phone services allow third party services to be billed through your phone account.

If I am unsure of a phone number, I enter it on my browser search line and see what comes up. Most of the time there is info from some of the phone number search websites.

I saw this on the news. I get calls on my mobile all the time from weird places and I just don't answer them anymore. If I don't recognize the number I don't answer. I figure if it's a real call they will leave a message.
