I keep a jar of coconut oil on the kitchen counter for injuries, dry skin, and moisturizing my hair and another in the pantry for cooking. It is a miracle product that heals cuts and burns quickly. Anyone who comes to visit and has an accident gets a dab of it on the spot. I've even managed to convert my husband.

It seems like a simple choice to me. We make such an effort to put the best food and beverage in our bodies, so why would we put a chemical ointment on a injury - especially for children! I flinch when I see people using those sanitizing lotions.

The use of antibiotics are a recent development, which has given rise to super bugs, much like pesticides have created super weeds. Collective Evolution posted two articles about several great natural products that are easily available.

Foods and herbs were once used on a daily basis to guard against infection and disease before the development of pharmaceutical antibiotics in the 1940s, and they continue to be used by natural enthusiasts around the world.

In a day and age where we are given a pill for every conceivable ill, it may seem strange to hear someone reject swallowing one down. We have come to believe here in the West that medications are our only option and remedies found in nature mere snake oil. But with big pharmaceutical companies shamelessly trying to make a buck at every turn, it’s important we remember that, long before these pills came to be, people were surviving naturally, utilizing hundreds of years of collected knowledge.

Many of our pharmaceuticals are based on products from plants, animals, bacteria (e.g. penicillin)...
We are no longer as DIY a world as we used to be when everyone took responsibility for themselves; when your neighbours and yourself were your available sources of help and health + whatever you could come up with.

Lila, thanks for adding this thought. There are times when modern medicine can be helpful. A friend's very large cat stretched out beside me and caught his claws in my sweater. He was freaking out, and as I was untangling his claws, he bit my hand on the fleshy part at the thumb. His tooth went all the way to the bone, and I needed antibiotics to clear up that infection. (It turned out he was cranky because he had an infected tooth that no one knew about.)

For the other times, the forgotten older ways can be helpful, and if you are around Lindaland, you will get some coconut oil for little cuts and scrapes.

If you are in Lilaland, you might get an essential oil, manual therapy, tea, cream or something fresh from the garden... depending on what ails you. Actually, you are most likely to get a thought on something preventive, because that is, as they say, the best medicine;)
