With global fanfare at a press conference in Paris on October 12th, Dr Igor Ashurbeyli proposed founding a new nation, one which would seek to be located in space, called Asgardia.
Over half a million curious possible citizens were attracted to Asgardia in a couple of weeks, which by itself reveals a very high level of interest on Earth in a future beyond Earth.
For Asgardia to proceed as an independent nation, current laws would need to change, as the 1967 Outer Space Treaty does not permit nations to set up in space, and states ~ "outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means” and "the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the...
