Some have said that the sun serves as a kind of "portal", so perhaps it just sailed right through!

That was a comet that flew into the sun a few days ago. It was one of the brightest comets in four decades. Here's it is in several NASA videos on space.com

They are saying it grazed around the sun but was destroyed by the suns forces before it could orbit. It sure looked like a dive to me!

Kreutz comets travel along what is called the Kreutz path, a single orbit that takes 800 years to complete. Kreutz comets pass by the sun and disintegrate almost every day, and while most go unnoticed, larger fragments such as the recent sungrazer can be spotted more easily (space.com)​
