Jean-Luc Picard is back! None of the other ST's compared to TNG. I hope CBS does a good job. Here is Patrick Stewart's announcement from his twitter feed.

"I will always be very proud to have been part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected and delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life from him when I thought that life was over.

During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.

I can only imagine what they will do with his character.

Weill he be an admiral? How will that work in the show?

I must have missed the posting when it first came out. I love what he says about the show and his role.

Yes, he was fascinating, exploring so many facets of what it means to be human.

Hope we will get more info on the new show soon. Also I hope they will make it different than STD is. Not that it's all bad but it was lacking somehow in the old ST flavour and philosophy.

On Netflix I started watching DS9 occasionally from the beginning and I really enjoy it. I remember in the 90ies I was first disappointed being also a big fan of TNG. I then also thought they just brought in the TNG characters such as O'Brien, Worf as regulars and others as guest appearances (Picard, Riker, etc.) to make it more attractive for TNG fans and to ease the transition for the nostalgic ones.
However, in the end after several seasons it had grown on me. I liked it as much as TNG and today I admit blasphemously that I even like it a bit more with TNG still as a close second. Cannot get enough of the two 'frenemies' Quark and Odo and their constant squabbling. Priceless. Very good characters and storylines altogether.

I hope with the new show they will now continue with the storyline after the Dominion wars. Would be logical with the old(er) Picard. All those prequels are tiring. Had enough of prequels or alternate universe past storylines such as the new cinema movies.

STD was very, very different. In a way, it as similar to how they tried to make Enterprise more hip and laid back, but kind of the opposite. I liked STD but like Sinera, I'm really over the prequels and I want to see advanced technology and the actual story line progressing in the universes they are all sitting in.

They need some great writers again like they had in TNG.

Could become interesting. If only it wasn't the writers/producers of the dismal 'identity politics'-driven ST Discovery show. Still I hope they cannot spoil it all.

I didn't see this original thread. TNG has interesting feelings for me. My dad was an enormous star trek fan and watched it a lot when I was growing up. I wasn't that interested in tv, but I saw much of it without realizing it. A year or so ago I decided to watch through it on Netflix. I Love It. I don't think I need to go into why I do, as it's probably a lot of why everyone else loves it.

I haven't seen the others like deep space 9 and such partially because of how much I appreciate TNG. I'm afraid it'll lose the spirit of the show that I love.
And that's what crossed my mind when I saw the trailer last night. It feels so intense and like it doesn't have the right pace. (Perhaps that's how people felt going from the original star trek, with William Shatner.)
I didn't even know that there was a borg character in a subsequent series. But I did highly enjoy that episode with the individual borg in TNG.

Anyway.
Maybe I'll watch through the later series to prepare myself. It just feels so homey and comforting currently, and I don't want to lose that.

DS9 is my fav even before TNG (which is #2). I whole-heartedly recommend it. When I started watching the first episodes in the 90s I also did not like it at first because of TNG nostalgia feelings.

However, I got used to it soon and loved it after about 3 seasons in when it also got better and better with the Dominon Wars plot arc. Yes, it is a bit grittier in tone overall but also has its light-hearted and funny moments.

E.g., Quark and Odo with their love-hate relationship for me is one of the best Star Trek character development elements ever and cannot be beaten, not even by Kirk, Spock & Bones or Picard & Data or whatever came later. As said, give it a try, it's all on Netflix.

I recently watched an episode of TNG, The Chain of Command Part 1. Patrick Stewart displays some marvellous acting in that episode. It is the one where he is interrogated by Gul Madred, of the Cardassion Union, and the torturer tries to get him to admit to seeing 5 lights, when indeed there are only 4, very intimidating to break his command of his own will.

I like this YouTubers comment expressing 'cautious optimism' judging from the new trailer. I feel the same somewhat. Still, like he has, I too have my same or similar reservations, of course.

Like with that Discovery show, for Picard again a lot was stolen from other show or show ideas already written. This does not bode well. The creators of these 'new' shows not just do propagandistic work (mostly identity politics, chasing away a lot of the original fanbase) but also lack original ideas. It also explains the many (partially more 'woke') reboots and relaunches taking place in Hollywood for many shows and movie franchises.
