English was created from Saxon German, French, Latin and the early Anglo languages. I love looking at the Germanic languages and picking out root words for ours. Like the word angst. I can't remember the translation but it's similar to yours. I used to do crossword puzzles so I've studied words and meanings. Just for fun, look up the true meaning of the word "person"

Cool. I'm still a kind of linguist, too.

Yes, angst is an English loan word from German and Danish, it stems from Old High German angust, I think the meaning stayed rather the same: fear, worry, anxiety, although loanwords can get a different meaning in the new language (or even in the old one), too.

There are many interesting loan words that came directly from German to English or also have a common root to the old Germanic languages of which angst is a good example.

Many Old English words are akin to German words today. E.g. the word niman existed in English for take. Niman is still the contemporary German word for take: nehmen. Today's take in English btw was 'taken' (yeah, great pun!) from the Vikings who invaded England, it is from Old Norse taka. Of course there is always the Roman/Latin part in the English language where a Latin (or French) equivalent word exists almost simultaneously with the Germanic version. For example get and receive.

I'll stop or we will derail the music thread with this now. :-))

However, to follow up the topic one more time with music. Coincidence (?!) wants it that I just saw this video which came out today where Fiona (ex Faun) talks about her project TVINNA and how she loves using the old words because they resemble today's German words.

Here's the new song in full:

Just btw, I have a new musical project planned and in preparation for 2021 and will start doing some 'Germanic/Nordic Folk'. Just one more song to finish for my metal project and then I'll start the new one. Looking foward to it. (Words will be in modern English though.)

I like how in the old music shows of the (mostly) 70ies they integrated the bands and artists into the audience. So it was all much closer and not just like today with the 'popstars' on a stage sealed off with barriers and security personnel from the common 'riffraff' and 'plebs'. ;)

I mean yeah, of of course it was just silly lipsynching and posing to a playback. But it is so much fun to watch. Some of the audience (or even hired dancing crowd) are cool and go along enthusiastically while others just seem to sit there and think 'how the heck did I get here?'. Haha. It's fun to watch though. Here's three examples from these old shows. Btw, didn't even know that Bon Scott was so well into bagpiping.

I listened to this on my vinyl collection yesterday and today and noticed on the back-cover info that this interesting concert in a church was 'by coincidence' (?) today exactly 10 years ago - 12/14/2010. Time flies.

D.E. Edwards has Native-American ancestors (although he generally played/plays religiously influenced Alternative Country and nowadays Indie and Dark Folk). These roots are sometimes recognisable in some of his songs. Just like in this first one.

On my vintage vinyl collection I got up again from out of the cellar of my parents' home where I had put it 1989 or so (so it is a musical time capsule 30 years old) the album Big Generator by Yes came up on the list and I remembered how much I loved THIS tune on it. Shame I had forgotten about it.

The above was a bit of a rant. However I've pretty much stopped listening to radio and been listening to music on a stick in the car. At work I have music on my phone I listen too. Mostly classic, prog, blues, some celtic and folk. Years ago when I was babysitting my kids I had more time to hunt down new music. Semi retired now, only work 3 days a week. So I have more time to start looking again. Few bands are playing a semi instrumental style ala Yes, or Zep for that matter. I know they're out there.
TY for the effort in putting together that reply, I'll give that stuff a listen over the next couple of days
Hey Puck, If you write me a PM with your email I could send you a bunch of my stuff you can put on a stick for your car. Much of it would be perfect for when you go out of the city, the city stuff - i got you covered there to don`t worry he he....

Oh, I wanted ask if anyone is posting there own music here?
I am a musician and as it relates to the forum I am currently waiting for a melody to come forward to go with some Lyrics that came to June after a remote healing session...
However i did once write a song based on one of Larons QHHT sessions with Lai, but i don`t think i shared it on the Forum before, here it is "Big Rock" :

BIG ROCK by Lousianna | Free Listening on SoundCloud

Lyrics :

Big Rock
yellow sand
universe Skye
on a planet that has weight to its waters
I see a clear white light transparency
things are occurring naturally

it never happens like this
we could turn the world upside down
shape yourself using your mind

Programming the sun like an alarm clock
for the weak this is their medicine

I'm relieved
nothings wrong with me
there`s a window in time
they`re sending their best information
targeting you to receive and give so much more

Humans love to feel weak and love to suffer
so they are loved
by the others
intention
your intention
intention
your intention

if you try to analyze and try to understand
you`ll fall down into your own frequency

The seats are now full
with tall light beings
they communicate in ways
we forget

Humans love to feel weak and love to suffer
so they are loved by the others

use your mind
to turn the world
upside down

intention
your intention
intention
your intention

Agree with Linda, it floats well with some magic and you have an interesting, enchanting voice.
If I posted my own music here (a form of progressive metal) it would shock. So I won't. :-))

First! O.o:D

Let's get funny a bit starting Part Two. Or better: lovely and cute. Combined with musical hardness. Which actually IS... funny.

And it seems impossible I know. Just discovered them 2-3 weeks ago and am still hooked. Two given laws for me do not apply anymore since then:

First, I never thought that Metal could be cute. As cute as a few months old kittens or puppies are.
Second, neither had I thought (according to my own proud musician ethos) I'd ever like one of those artificial vocal pop groups / boy/girl pop dance groups casted together by the music industry that spits a new one out in a planned way almost every year - at least in Europe. Well. I have to make a double exception here because this is hilarious.

First of all this is so great for me since the backing band is excellent and they've actually not been casted beforehand, so this is the more organic part. They are first-class musicians.
Secondly, it's because the girls do an extraordinary and excellent performance I've not seen anything like this before this way, not in any other boy or girl group I had to watch.
This regards singing, choreography, show and all. The choreo fits the music perfectly, it's even quite hypnotic imv. Of course they have been trained by the industry to do so, everything is scripted, I know this as I know the music industry and how they do it. And yet I have greatest respect for them. Moreover since it's not easy to 'survive' with this and like this before a normally quite purist/traditionalist and die-hard metalhead crowd. And they do!

Let's not forget ... this is at the same time still Metal. I never thought this combination possible. The main singer sings wonderfully for her age. The bass player (the funny bald guy that has a happy time all-out) is amazing. The drummer and the guitar players, too. The 2 dancers and background singers are amazing (and ... cute).

I've watched this quite a few times and it will not be the last time. Have an open mind when you watch it, even if you're not into Metal. Btw. it's called "Kawaii Metal" (which actually means "Cute Metal" in Japanese). And now it is even being embraced by metalheads around the world - as one can clearly see in this English audience going wild like it was Slayer, Priest, Maiden or Metallica on stage. Which again ... is funny. :))

“Taka” is same in Icelandic “taka mynd” means to “take a picture”. Cheers to Word nerds ....

"One day I am going to grow wings"

Still get chills every time at 3:40 when the multivoices choir part starts. This song is a friggin' masterpiece and so ethereal like many things this group has done, especially at that time mid to end nineties.

For me, the very synonym of Funkrock is this band and this very song (not RHCP or or other Crossover or Rapmetal or NuMetal bands).

This live version from 1979 (!!) I grew up with enjoying it during the 80ies (and part 90ies) in any decent rock disco (yeah, we used to have them round here) I went to back then as my younger self.

"There is no other ..."

They had huge success in my country but I don't know if they are/were known well in other countries such as US or Canada? (A bit like Saga it seems.)

Time for the Van..
My all time favorite - saw him once. Fantasy dream - I'm in an Irish pub drinking Harp beer, he walks in, and takes the stage for a few songs.
My daughter was raised with his music and still loves it.

The man is clearly awakened. Have you listened to how many of his songs are about awakening, being awakened, or trying to wake people up? Hymns to the Silence, In The Garden, Enlightenment, etc. The list goes on. It's like he is doing the soundtrack to The Event.
