May the Sound of this Bell Penetrate deep into the Cosmos Even in the darkest spots Living Beings are able to hear it clearly So that all suffering in them cease Understanding come to their hearts And they transcend the path Of Sorrow and Death The Universal Dharma Door Is already open The Sound of the Rising Tide is heard clearly The miracle happens A beautiful child appears in the heart of a Lotus flower One single drop of this Compassionate Water Is enough to bring back the refreshing Spring To our Mountains and Rivers Listening to the Bell I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve My mind calm, my body relaxed A smile is born on my lips Following the Sound of the Bell My breath brings me back to the safe Island of Mindfulness In the Garden of my Heart The flowers of Peace Bloom beautifully.

Read by Thich Nath Hanh, chanted by brother Phap Niem.

It has been nearly twenty years since Emmy-award winning composer Gary Malkin agreed to join with me in creating Graceful Passages: A Companion for Living and Dying. Featuring his music as a soundtrack behind the voices of Thich Nhat Hanh, Ram Dass, Zalman Schacher, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, and many others, the recording was originally intended for the dying and their families. Asked the question, 'What would you say to a dying person in five minutes?', their responses- while arising from different faiths and traditions- speak to the universal heart of humanity. The audience for Graceful Passages includes those embracing their grieving process or recognizing their own mortality as an integral part of their spiritual life. (Special thanks to Doris Laesser Stillwater for introducing most of the voices to this project.) Touching hundreds of thousands around the world, the videos made from the soundtrack have reached even more lives. Thank you for enjoying this expression!
